Rules of Social Media Optimization (SMO)

Since the rise of Social Media Optimization (SMO), major figures have begun, since August 2006, to describe the rules that must be taken into account for a good social media optimization. Rohit Bhargava from Ogilvy Public Relations is the first person to describe the first 5 Rules of Social Media Optimization (SMO)

Other major figures in the area have added great contributions to this list:

  • Jeremiah Owyang – Rules of Social Media Optimization
  • Cameron Olthuis – Introduction to Social Media Optimization
  • Loren Baker – Social Media Optimization: 13 Rules of SMO
  • Lee Odden – New Rules for Social Media Optimization
  • Saptarshi Roy Chaudhury – Social Media Optimization – Two More Rules for SMO
  1. Increase your linkability.
  2. Make easy labels and markers.
  3. Reward inbound links.
  4. Help your content travel.
  5. Encourage the mashup.
  6. Be a user resource, even if does not help.
  7. Reward useful and valuable users.
  8. Participate (join the conversation).
  9. Know how to target your audience.
  10. Create content.
  11. Be real.
  12. Do not forget your roots; be humble.
  13. Do not be afraid to try new things; Keep freshness.
  14. Develop a SMO strategy.
  15. Choose your SMO tactics wisely.
  16. Make SMO part of your process and best practices.
  17. Do not be afraid to let go of a message or idea and let others have
  18. Encourage new participants
  19. The SMO is an ongoing process

These rules seem so essential and primordial to be applied every day, starting from the last rule of Saptarshi Roy Chaudhury, I would like to add two new rules:

20. Create content with others and let the ego aside

Invite a colleague to write or participate in a web page or create content team is the key to good content and a high possibility of having more reach, more traffic, more presence, it increases credibility and image of the brand, this allows foster ties and expand the network of contacts; additionally your blog readers will be happy to read good content written by a team of professionals, this inspires union and confidence. Of course, from the point of Loren Baker, humility should always be present in every step that we as professionals in a competitive world cannot grow up alone, you grow up with the support of others so you have to leave your ego aside and of course even more in the world of egobloggers.

21. Create visually appealing content

today the content is not only about textual content but also visually appealing, using different tools you can present your content to attract, encourage and keep people focused and concentrated on shared content; you can make infographics, timelines, GIF, videos, images, among others. The limit is in you.

Tell me, what do you think about these rules?
